Getting marked cases at the sizing station

  1. Using the wrong sizing die for that caliber
    1. make sure to use the correct sizing die for the caliber being loaded.
  2. Cases may be oversized from firing in a gun with an oversized chamber
    1. the case may have outlived its useful life
    2. start with new cases and fire only in a known chamber
    3. it could have also been too hot of a load or an over-pressured load
  3. Dirty cases
    1. clean the cases before loading
  4. Brass or nickel is adhering to the carbide insert
    1. lube cases properly to prevent this
    2. clean the insert with 600 grit to remove build-up
    3. use Sweets 762® solvent to clean the die
  5. Using new cases which have sharp edges at the case mouth
    1. deburr the case mouth with a deburring tool

Cases are not properly sized

  1. Not pulling the operating handle (part # 20114) down all of the way
    1. pull the handle down all of the way and then push it up all of the way
  2. Cases may be oversized from firing in a gun with an oversized chamber

    2. start with new cases and fire only in a known chamber
    3. it could have also been too hot of a load or an over-pressured load

Cases are sticking in the sizing die

  1. Insufficient case lube was used
    1. cartridges for which Dillon recommends case lube: .44-40, .44 mag, .41 mag and .45LC
    2. spread the lube evenly on the cases
  2. Alcohol has not yet evaporated from Dillon Case Lube (part #13733)
    1. allow ten minutes for the alcohol from the case lube to dry before sizing the cases

Decap pin is not working or is breaking

  1. Smaller caliber case may be stuck inside a larger case, media and/or polish has formed a hard mixture in the bottom of the case, or there is debris in the case
    1. examine the cases before depriming. Make sure they are free of debris
  2. Berdan cases
    1. have one or two flash holes that are offset from the middle. Berdan cases cannot be reloaded and should be discarded
  3. Decapping assembly is not screwed all the way down into the toolhead
    1. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for proper adjustment
  4. Failsafe return bracket (part # 13355) is improperly mounted
    1. handle (part # 20114) will make contact and stop movement before decapping is accomplished
    2. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for proper mounting of the failsafe return bracket
  5. Point of decap pin is squared off, rather than rounded
    1. pin gets stuck in anvil of primer and pulls it back up
    2. clean the brass build-up off the pin using steel wool
  6. Burrs around the flash hole
    1. use a flash hole deburring/uniformer tool

Cases are not getting primers

  1. Dillon recommends standing up in front of the machine while operating it
  2. Be sure you have the machine mounted on a solid surface. If the bench moves or flexes this may result in priming problems. Again, be sure to be standing up to operate the machine.
  3. Magazine tube (part # 13879 for the small tube and part # 13673 for the large tube) is empty
    1. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for instructions on filling the magazine tube
  4. Using the wrong size primer for the caliber being loaded
    1. consult a loading or powder manual for the correct primer size for the desired caliber
  5. Wrong magazine tip (part # 14024 for the small tip and part # 14003 for the large tip) or magazine tube (this is part # 330S for the small tube and part # 330L for the large tube)
    1. the machine comes with a small and a large tube. The tip is blue for the small magazine tube and red for the large magazine tube
  6. Magazine tip (part # 14024 for the small tip and part # 14003 for the large tip) is not completely on the magazine tube (part # 330S or 330L).
    1. be sure the tip is fully seated on the magazine tube
  7. Magazine tip (part # 14024 for the small tip and part # 14003 for the large tip) is not seated fully in the keyway slot
    1. drop the tube and the tip into the primer housing and turn until you feel it drop into the keyway slot, then push down all of the way
  8. Primer seating punch (part # 13757 for the small punch and part # 13967 for the large punch) is the wrong size
    1. one seating punch is for small primers and the other is for large primers
  9. Primer cup (part # 13657 for the small cup and part # 13621 for the large cup) is upside down or is the wrong size
    1. the primer cup is gold for the small primers and silver for the large primers
  10. Improper indexing
    1. pause at the neutral position before pushing forward to prime
    2. the index ball (part # 14019) may be missing
  11. The lower adjustment screw (part # 13961) needs adjusting
    1. if the primer cup (part # 13657 for the small cup and part # 13621 for the large cup) is not going straight up into the hole in the shellplate, adjust the lower adjustment screw (part # 13961) by turning in small increments until the desired results are achieved
  12. Upper adjustment screw (part # 13961) needs adjusting
    1. the primer cup (part # 13657 or 13621) must be directly under the magazine tip (part # 14024 or 14003) when handle is pulled all the way down. Adjust by turning in 1/8 turn increments until primers drop properly
  13. Primer seating punch (part # 13757 for the small punch and part # 13967 for the large punch) is not compressed and locked properly in place. There should be about the thickness of a dime between the magazine tip and the primer cup when the slide is pushed back
    1. remove the primer slide (part # 20125 for the small slide and part # 20124 for the large slide) from the machine, invert and compress the primer cup (part # 13657 for the small cup and part # 13621 for the large cup), primer seating punch (part # 13757 for the small punch and part # 13967 for the large punch), and primer punch spring (part # 13982) fully against a hard surface. Remove the primer punch set screw (part # 13823), then release all parts and clean thoroughly. Reverse the process to reassemble
  14. Primers are stuck in the magazine tube (part #330S or 330L)
    1. do not try to force primers out of the magazine tube. Dispose of the tube safely
    2. spray lube inside the tube and tape both ends. Dispose of the tube safely

Primer slide is sticking

  1. Primer slide (part # 20125 for the small slide and part # 20124 for the large slide) is dirty
    1. remove the plastic jacket. Clean the primer slide with rubbing alcohol or with acetone. Clean the plastic jacket with soap and water.
  2. Check for burrs in the housing where the primer slide rides
    1. remove burrs with a file
  3. Primer seating punch (part # 13757 for the small punch and part # 13967 for the large punch) is not compressed and locked properly in place.
    1. Remove the primer slide (part # 20125 for the small slide and part # 20124 for the large slide) from the machine. Invert and compress the primer cup (part # 13657 for the small cup or part # 13621 for the large cup), primer seating punch (part # 13757 for the small punch and part # 13967 for the large punch), and primer punch spring (13982) fully against a hard surface. Remove the primer punch set screw (13823). Release all parts and clean thoroughly. Repeat the process in reverse to reassemble

Multiple primers are dropping simultaneously

  1. Using the large magazine tube (part # 13673) for small primers
    1. change to the correct magazine tube for the primers being used
  2. Magazine tube (part # 13879 for the small tube and part # 13673 for the large tube) is not seated fully in the keyway slot
    1. make sure there is actually a magazine tube in the primer housing
    2. drop magazine tube and tip into the primer housing, turn until you feel it drop into the keyway slot, then push down all of the way
  3. Primer feed stop pin (part # 14051) is dirty or sticks
    1. clean the pin with soap and water. Clean out the hole with a cotton swab soaked with rubbing alcohol or acetone

Crushed, sideways, upside down or improperly seated primers

  1. It is important to be standing up rather than sitting down while operating the machine
  2. Not pushing the handle fully forward or hard enough
    1. make sure that full forward movement is not being blocked
  3. Locator buttons are missing or are the wrong size
    1. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for the correct placement and size locator buttons for the caliber being loaded
  4. Using the wrong size primer for the caliber being loaded
    1. consult a loading manual for the correct size primer for the desired caliber
    2. make sure full forward movement of the handle is not being blocked
  5. Primers were loaded upside down
    1. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for proper primer loading procedure
  6. Using the large magazine tube (part # 330L) for small primers
    1. use the proper magazine tube for the primer size being loaded
  7. Primer cup (part # 13657 for the small primer cup and part # 13621 for the large primer cup) is upside down or is the wrong size
    1. the primer cup is gold for the small primers and silver for the large primers
  8. Shellplate is too loose
    1. shellplate must turn freely, but not be too loose
    2. tighten the shellplate bolt down all of the way
  9. Improper indexing
    1. pause at the neutral position before pushing forward to prime
  10. Primer adjustment screw (part # 13961) is out of adjustment
    1. upper adjustment screw (part # 13961) needs to be calibrated
    2. primer cup (part # 13657 or 13621) must be directly under the magazine tip (part # 331S or 331L) when handle is pulled all the way down. Adjust by turning in 1/8 turn increments until primers drop properly
  11. Residue has formed under the primer cup (part # 13627 for the small cup and part # 13621 for the large cup)
    1. a temporary fix is to rotate the primer cup (part # 13657 for the small cup and part # 13621 for the large cup) several times to free it
    2. remove and soak all parts, with the exception of the plastic primer slide bearing (part # 13722), in rubbing alcohol or in acetone and then scrub with a toothbrush
  12. Primer seating punch (part # 13757 for the small seating punch and part # 13967 for the large seating punch) is not compressed and locked properly in place
    1. remove the primer slide (part # 20125 for the small primer slide and part # 20124 for the large slide) from the `machine, invert and compress the primer cup (part # 13657 for the small cup and part # 13621 for the large cup), primer seating punch (part # 13757 for the small seating punch and part # 13967 for the large seating punch), and primer punch spring (part # 13982) fully against a hard surface. Remove the primer punch set screw (part # 13823), then release all parts and clean thoroughly. Reverse the process to reassemble
  13. Military primer pocket needs swaging
    1. use a swaging tool, such as the Dillon Super Swage 600, to enlarge the primer pocket to commercial specifications

Spent primers are not dropping into the spent primer cup

  1. Spent primer cup (part # 13651) is missing
    1. consult the diagram in the Square Deal instruction manual for proper placement

  3. Failsafe return bracket (part # 13355) is on upside down and is blocking the escape hole

  5. Primer track is clogged with primers or other debris

Shellplate is not indexing smoothly

  1. Not going full stroke on the handle (part # 20114)
    1. pull the handle down all of the way and then push it up all of the way
  2. Shellplate is too loose
    1. shellplate must turn freely, but not be too loose
    2. tighten the shellplate bolt all the way down
  3. Bottom of index lever (part # 20285) needs to be greased
    1. grease the bottom edge of the index lever assembly with all-purpose grease
  4. Primers, powder or other debris is trapped under the shellplate
    1. keep the shellplate clean. Remove and soak in rubbing alcohol or in acetone
    2. when replacing the shellplate bolt (part # 13328) lube the bolt with a little all-purpose grease

  1. Wrong shellplate for that caliber
    1. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for the correct size shellplate for the caliber being loaded
  2. Wrong case for that caliber shellplate
    1. check the case headstamp for caliber markings
  3. Locator buttons are missing or are the wrong size
    1. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for the correct placement and size locator buttons for the caliber being loaded
  4. Shellplate is upside down
    1. the number or letter in a circle must face up
  5. Rim of the case is damaged or the case was shot in an open-bolt gun
    1. an example of an open-bolt gun would be a 9mm sub-machine gun
    2. discard any damaged cases
  6. Worn out case from overuse or from hot loads
    1. useful life of the case is over and it should be thrown away
  7. Debris has collected in the grooves of the shellplate
    1. clean out the debris with an awl or with a toothbrush

Powder throw is inconsistent

  1. Erratic handle movement
    1. smoothly cycle the handle all off the way down and then all of the way up

  3. Machine is not secured properly
    1. look for loose bolts or an unstable bench
  4. Powder has not settled in the hopper (part # 13691)
    1. cycle the handle (part # 20114) four or five times
    2. keep the powder measure hopper at least half full
  5. Powder die (part # 13865) is not screwed down far enough to allow full travel of the powder bar (part # 20125 or 20124)
    1. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for the proper adjustment of the powder die
  6. Wrong size powder bar (part # 20125 for the small bar and part # 20124 for the large bar) for the powder throw requirements
    1. use the small bar for ten grains or less and the large bar for more than ten grains
  7. Bellcrank bolt (part #318) is loose
    1. this allows the bellcrank cube to slip out of engagement with the powder bar
    2. tighten the bolt
  8. Powder funnel, drop tube or powder measure body is dirty or is clogged
    1. soak the powder funnel in rubbing alcohol or in acetone.
    2. swab out the drop tube with a dry cotton swab
    3. wipe out the powder measure body with a dry cloth

Powder bar is sticking

  1. Powder bar (20125 or 20124) is dirty
    1. clean with rubbing alcohol or with acetone. The powder bar must remain clean. do not lube
    2. do not use sandpaper, a file or anything else abrasive on the powder bar
  2. Powder bar insert (part # 359S or 359L) or powder bar bolt (part # 361) is over-adjusted or adjusted in the wrong direction
    1. this can bind the powder bar insert (part # 359S or 359L) causing the powder bar (part # 358S or 358L) to drag or break off the head of the powder bar bolt
    2. turn the powder bar bolt clockwise to drop more powder. Turn counter-clockwise to drop less powder

  3. Case is full
    1. this is common in 9mm
    2. slow down the operation of the handle
  4. No primer in the case

    1. look for loose bolts or an unstable bench

  1. Wrong size bullet
    1. make sure to use the correct bullet for the case being loaded

  3. Cracked case mouth
    1. throw the case away

  1. New cases
    1. symptom will usually go away after one or two firings

Bullet is tilted after seating or the loaded round varies in overall length

  1. Bullet was not straight on the case prior to seating
  2. Case is belled too much or not enough
    1. set the bell so that the bullet sits on top of the case without falling off, but not so much that the bullet falls into the case
  3. Wrong seating stem for that bullet or caliber
    1. make sure to use the correct seating stem for the desired caliber
    2. use the stem that makes the best contact with the bullet
  4. Using the wrong diameter bullet
    1. make sure that the bullet diameter is correct for the bore being used
    2. some brands and shapes of bullets give greater variations than others
  5. Using the wrong locator buttons
    1. consult the Square Deal Instruction Manual for the right size locator buttons for the desired caliber
  6. No case in station two when tightening the powder die clamp
    1. this leaves the bell uneven and slants the funnel.
    2. after adjustment of the bell, put the case back into the shellplate, pull the handle down all of the way and then tighten everything up
  7. Variations in case wall thickness
    1. if case appears thicker than usual, chamfer the case mouth
    2. check the case length, it may need trimming

    1. increase the bell by turning the powder die. To do this, turn the die clockwise in 1/8" increments
  3. Lead or wax has built-up in the die
    1. soak the die in rubbing alcohol or in acetone
  4. Soft lead
    1. use Dillon hard cast bullets

  4. Using wrong crimp die for that size case
    1. look on the die body for caliber identification.
  5. Not going full stroke on the handle (part #307)
    1. pull handle down all of the way and then push it up all of the the way
  6. Over-belled case
    1. over-belling in station two will require over-adjustment of the crimp die to take out the excessive flare
    2. set the bell so that the bullet sits on top of the case without falling off, but not so much that the bullet falls into the case
  7. Over-crimping
    1. consult the Square Deal Instruction Manual for adjustment instructions
  8. Variations in case lengths
    1. trim cases
  9. Using old 543G powder funnel for .44-40

  2. Too much flare has been left on the cases

    2. set the bell so that the bullet sits on top of the case without falling off, but not so much that the bullet falls into the case
  3. Not enough or too much crimp
    1. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for the proper die adjustment
  4. Using range brass that has been shot in someone else's gun, especially those with extra large or unsupported chambers
    1. start with new cases and shoot only in a known chamber

Rounds are not ejecting after station four

  1. Ejector wire (part # 13433) is placed improperly
    1. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for the correct placement of the ejector wire
  2. Wrong locator buttons
    1. consult the Square Deal instruction manual for the correct size of locator buttons for the desired caliber
  3. Openings of the shellplate are pointed or burred
    1. round off with a file

Handle movement is difficult

  1. Primers are trapped under the shellplate (part # 324)
    1. remove the shellplate and remove any trapped primers
  2. Bottom of the index lever assembly (part # 366) needs grease
    1. spread a light coat of all purpose grease on the bottom of index lever assembly where it makes contact with the index bolt
  3. Crank pin (part # 13622) needs to be greased
    1. remove the pin and spread an even coat of all purpose grease on it
  4. Powder or other debris is causing jamming in the ram, or other internal parts
    1. remove the shaft and wipe off the shaft and the shaft area
